Honda's slate for Tokyo Auto Salon includes S2000 revival, many Mugens

Honda has pulled back the covers on what we can expect to see at the 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon, including what looks to be an S2000 refresh some four years after the convertible left production. The S2000 Modulo Climax is an "exhibition model" based on the old roadster, but features updated front and rear fascias as well as an interior trimmed out in black and burgundy. Beyond that, details are scarce as hen's teeth.

Honda will also show off a number of vehicles based on the N-One mini, including the N-One Modulo Style, Mugen Racing N-One Concept and an N-One worked up by the Japan Nailist Association. That last creation features plenty of rhinestone decoration. (We wish we were joking.) Mugen will also display a tarted-up CR-V Design Study as well as the CR-Z Mugen RZ: a 300-unit specialty vehicle.

Meanwhile, the manufacturer's motorcycle arm will show off the Goldwing F6B, previously seen at EICMA 2012 as well as the CB1300 Super Four Special Edition and the NC700X. The automaker will also pepper its stand with a few of its racing machines for the public to enjoy.

Honda Performance Development to Feature Oval-Track Products, Support at IMIS Debut

Honda Performance Development, the racing arm of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., will showcase its products and support programs for grassroots oval-track racers at the 2012 International Motor Sports Industry Show (IMIS), December 6-8 at the Indianapolis Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana.

This is HPD's inaugural appearance at IMIS; however, Honda has a long history of grassroots oval-racing participation, having supported Quarter Midget racers in the Midwest for the past decade. Through HPD, Honda also provides a broad program of contingency awards for this entry-level category. 

"We are proud to be able to use IMIS to showcase our support for oval racing," said Marc Sours, Commercial Division Senior Manager at HPD.  "We are happy to complement that support by reaching out directly to the racing community and featuring a sampling of oval classes in which competitors use Honda engines and components. The IMIS show provides an ideal platform for accomplishing this goal."

Featured at the HPD display stand, IMIS booth #261, will be a HPD-branded Quarter Midget, powered by a Honda GX-series engine, along with several Honda generator models, which are found in pit lanes throughout the racing world.

A United States Auto Club (USAC) National Midget car, powered by a Honda hybrid engine utilizing a K20 cylinder head with a K24 engine block, will also be on display at the HPD booth.

Honda Micro-Commuter Prototype Takes a Step Towards Reality

A year after Honda revealed its Micro-Commuter car as a concept at the Tokyo Motor Show, the automaker is moving towards the machine’s production with a prototype model that’s significantly more real-world ready.

 

With the original model looking straight out of a sci-fi movie, this latest version trades its covered wheels for exposed tiny rollers, while the shape more closely resembles a mini-car. At 98.4-inches in length its roughly half-a-foot shorter than a Smart fortwo.

Inside the cabin now more closely resembles a production vehicle, trading a steering wheel that operated like a joystick for a traditional two-spoke unit.

If there is one future-forward aspect, it’s that the car’s dash is actually a tablet, displaying information like vehicle speed and the range left in the batteries, while also doubling as a back-up camera.

Based on what Honda calls a “Variable Design Platform” the concept uses a basic structure and battery pack design, which allows for the body to be modified for different needs. Shown here is a three-seat layout, with space for one adult driver and two children behind, while Honda also says a small van-style body could be fitted, or even a convertible.

Powered by a 15 kW electric motor, the Micro-Commuter concept has a range of 60 km (37 miles) and a charge time of 3 hours, with a top speed of 80 km/h (50 mph).

An urban mobility solution, Honda is pushing ahead with the Micro-Commuter for use on Japanese and European roads in a unique class of vehicle that sits between motorcycles and the smallest cars currently available.

Honda Showcases Three New Hybrid Systems

Hybrid technology will play a large part in Honda’s future plans, and the Japanese automaker has rolled out a preview of three new hybrid systems with different goals. There’s one for small cars, one with options, and one all about performance.

This is a step in the right direction. Honda seems to be the first automaker to realize that hybrid technology can serve a multitude of uses in different cars; it doesn’t have to be all about efficiency. That said, two of Honda’s three hybrid systems do stress fuel economy over performance, and with over a million Honda hybrids sold so far, it’s a good idea to stay the course…but to add in some variety too.

First up is the Intelligent Mode Hybrid system, which will debut on the 2014 Honda Accord Plug-In. The engine and transmission have been designed to operate with the hybrid system in either EV, Engine, or Hybrid modes. EV mode allows the driver to make the most of the limited battery, up to 15 miles. Hybrid mode uses the gas engine to charge the batteries and use the electric motors to drive the car, while Engine mode is dedicated to highway speeds and uses the engine itself to drive the car forward.

Honda is also developing the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system, with an eye towards performance. This system first appeared on the Acura NSX Concept, but will debut on the Acura RLX next year The Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system will use three electric motors, combined with a 3.5 liter V6 engine to deliver what Honda claims is V8-like performance with the fuel economy of a four-cylinder. With power going to all four-wheels, a V6 engine, and three electric motors, Honda claims the Sport Hybrid system will produce in the area of 370 horsepower, while returning combined gas mileage of 30 mpg.

 Finally there is the intelligent dual-clutch drive, which will use a 7-speed transmission mated to a 1.5 liter Atkinson-cycle engine and a single high-output electric motor focused exclusively on efficiency. Honda is aiming for a low weight, and a 30% improvement in efficiency over the current one-motor hybrid systems. Look for this system to debut on one of Honda’s small cars, possibly the Fit, or the next-generation CR-Z.

With all these hybrid options, Honda has a little something for everyone.

Honda Develops New Lightweight and Compact Hybrid System Named “SPORT HYBRID Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive”

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has developed a new SPORTS HYBRID Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive system, a lightweight and compact one-motor hybrid system optimized for small-sized vehicles. This new hybrid system will be the latest addition to the Earth Dreams Technology series of next generation powertrain technology that realizes both excellent driving performance and high fuel efficiency.

Together with the SPORT HYBRID Intelligent Multi Mode Drive, the world's most efficient¹ two-motor hybrid system optimized for mid-sized vehicles, and the SPORT HYBRID SH-AWD® (Super Handling - All Wheel Drive), the three-motor hybrid system optimized for large-sized vehicles enabling independent control of torque distribution to both right and left rear wheels, the newly developed SPORT HYBRID Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive will constitute the lineup of three different Honda SPORT HYBRID systems that accommodate different vehicle characteristics. Honda will continue expanding the application of these hybrid systems based on vehicle characteristics.

One-motor SPORT HYBRID Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive
In addition to top-level fuel efficiency in its class², the fun of driving is realized with acceleration g-force more powerful than that of existing models as well as a rhythmic and linear acceleration feeling. This drive unit combines a newly developed inline 4-cylinder 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle engine with a 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) system with a built-in high-output motor and a Lithium-Ion battery to improve efficiency by more than 30 percent compared to a conventional one-motor hybrid system.  

• The combination of the one-motor hybrid system and the engine realizes sporty driving during acceleration and high-speed cruising by using the clutches to engage the engine  
• Highly efficient electric vehicle (EV) driving is realized during startup and low- to medium-speed cruising by using the clutches to disengage the engine
• This system contributes to the improvement of fuel efficiency by increasing energy regeneration using the clutches to disengage the engine during deceleration  

Two-motor SPORT HYBRID Intelligent Multi Mode Drive / Plug-in:
Through the adoption of high-efficiency/high-output motors, both brisk acceleration with an EV-like driving feel and high fuel efficiency are realized at the same time. This hybrid system realizes the world's highest efficiency¹ by combining a newly-developed engine dedicated to hybrid vehicles coupled with two built-in motors and a lock-up clutch, along with a Lithium-Ion battery, and by optimally switching the driving mode among three different profiles depending on the driving situation. This hybrid system, which is also suitable as a plug-in hybrid system, will be available in the North American version of the 2014 Honda Accord Plug-in, scheduled to be introduced to the market in January 2013. The system switches the operation among the following three driving modes depending on driving conditions and the battery charge level:

• "EV Drive" for driving by the electric motor only, using electricity from the battery and regeneration during deceleration
• "Engine Drive" for medium-to high-speed cruising with the engine and axle directly connected by a lock-up clutch, with engine power mechanically transferred to the wheels
• "Hybrid Drive" for urban driving and powerful acceleration using the motor with electricity generated by the engine

Three-motor SPORT HYBRID SH-AWD ® (Super Handling - All Wheel Drive):
The combination of a V-6 engine and this high-output three-motor system realizes acceleration performance equivalent to that of a V-8 engine with fuel efficiency better than that of an inline 4-cylinder engine. A new direct-injected 3.5-liter V-6 engine is installed in the front of the vehicle and combined with a newly-developed 7-speed DCT system with a built-in motor. This unique Honda technology uses two electric motors installed in the rear to control torque distribution to the right and left rear wheels.

• Using independent motors for the right and left rear wheels, positive torque is applied to the outside wheel and negative torque is applied to the inside wheel, making independent control of torque distribution to the rear wheels possible without relying on engine output
• Depending on the radius of the curve, the energy generated by the inside wheel is recovered electrically and applied to the outside wheel to self-generate torque necessary for the vehicle to make the turn

2013 Honda N-One Debuts

The 2013 Honda N-One is the latest model in Honda's N Series of mini vehicles.

The Honda N-One went on sale on Friday in Japan, with no production plans on tap for the U.S.

The N-One lineup includes a premium model that riffs off the Mini Cooper, with a two-tone treatment for the body and roof. There are five color combinations for the two-tone treatment.

The N-One moves Honda's mini vehicles further into upscale territory with a new Emergency Stop Signal system as standard. The system responds to sudden braking and automatically starts the hazard lights to alert vehicles behind the N-One.

The N-One joins the Honda N Box and N Box+ in Honda's home market.

Honda Pledges $500,000 to Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy Relief

In the wake of devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, American Honda today announced a pledge of $500,000 to the American Red Cross - Disaster Relief Fund, for use during humanitarian relief and recovery efforts in areas affected by the storm.

"This giant storm hit many areas particularly hard, and Honda wants to support the many individuals and families devastated by the hurricane's impact," said Tetsuo Iwamura, president and chief executive officer of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., and chief operating officer of Honda's North American region. "As we have in responding to past natural disasters, supporting the Red Cross is an effective way to quickly reach the front lines."

The Honda donation consists of cash as well as Honda products including portable generators and water pumps for use in the relief and rebuilding efforts. A special company fund will match its associates' personal contributions to the Red Cross on a dollar-for-dollar basis at various Honda companies.

American Honda Motor Co., Inc., is working with the American Red Cross to establish online channels that will facilitate donations from Honda and Acura automobile dealers, Honda motorcycle and power equipment dealers, customers, suppliers and others interested in supporting the Hurricane Sandy relief effort through the Red Cross. The online channels will be available within 24 hours.

This donation represents the collective contribution of the Honda family of companies and its associates in the U.S. and Canada, which consists of sales, manufacturing, finance and research and development operations, with more than 33,000 associates. Contributions from Honda's operations in Canada will be made to the Canadian Red Cross.

In addition, Honda Financial Services is instituting a number of measures to provide relief to customers directly affected by the storm, including temporary adjustments to policies on fee payments, late credit bureau reporting, extensions of loan payments, waivers of late charges and other services when appropriate.

Honda has been in close communication with the Red Cross regarding its need for material and equipment. The company has a longstanding relationship with the Red Cross and has supported the emergency relief organization in previous disaster relief efforts through cash, product and in-kind donations.

Honda Fit She’s, the world’s only car aimed exclusively at women

Around the world, building and designing cars remains a male-dominated business, and many companies live by an old axiom that women will buy a man's car but men won't buy a woman's car. While a few companies have attempted to bend that rule, only Honda has chosen to embrace it with the Honda Fit She's -- the only model built by an automaker today aimed exclusively at women. Hope you like pink, ladies.

 

There's a long and embarrassing history of automakers attempting to lure women with ladies-only models. At the turn of the 20th century, electric cars were marketed to wives with the pitch that their lack of hand-crank starting would avoid broken shoulders and/or death. In 1955, Chrysler made a bid for feminine attention with the Dodge LaFemme -- which came in a two-tone pink-and-white paint scheme, along with a storage place for the matching purse and rain hat. Lest you think modern executives learned from errors of the past, in 2000 Ford showed off a concept Windstar minivan developed with Maytag featuring a compact washer/dryer, microwave and vacuum in the rear hatch, because why would a soccer mom ever want to be parted from her appliances?

As women have grown to buy more cars in recent decades -- accounting for about one-third of car shoppers in the United States -- such attempts have given way to more savvy marketing. But in Japan, the gender divide remains more stark; half of all working-age women stay out of the workforce due to more stringent societal pressure to choose homemaking over careers, a major reason Japan's economy has been stuck in a rut for decades. But there's a cohort of younger Japanese women putting work first, and in a weak market Honda sees an opening.Launched this summer, the Honda Fit She's designers say they wanted to take a regular Fit subcompact and make it in their words "adult cute." That means lots of pink: Pink stitching in the seats and steering wheel and floor mats, matched by pink metallic bezels around the shifter and displays. There's also a few extra shades of pink in the special She's badge, spelled with a heart for an apostrophe. If pink isn't a customer's style, Japanese buyers can also select a Fit She's in shades of brown and white that a Honda executive told the Yomuri Shinbun newspaper match the color of eyeshadow.

To Honda's credit, the Fit She's beauty treatment isn't just skin deep. It also comes with special windshield glass that cuts 99 percent of ultraviolet rays and a "Plasmacluster" air conditioning system that Honda claims can improve a driver's skin quality, all aimed at stopping those wrinkles that turn adult cute into just adult. With a starting price of $17,500, the Fit She's got an attractive price for a home-market Japanese car -- but automakers wouldn't need special editions if taking advice from women wasn't such a noteworthy event.

2013 Acura ZDX Luxury Crossover To Get Numerous Enhancements in its Final Model Year

The innovative and stylish Acura ZDX crossover vehicle, introduced in 2009, will receive numerous styling and technology enhancements for the 2013 model year, which will be the final year on the market for ZDX as the Acura brand sharpens its focus on new models and core products, the company announced today.

The 2013 ZDX will receive several new features, including a redesigned front grille, front and rear parking sensors, power folding side mirrors and safety features such as Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW). The 2013 Acura ZDX will go on sale October 19, 2012, with a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) starting at $50,920*.

"People shopping for a luxury crossover vehicle will find the Acura ZDX an even more attractive product," said Jeff Conrad, vice president and general manager of the Acura Division. "Moving forward, we will continue to advance the Acura lineup with a focus on new core models, like the recently redesigned RDX and the upcoming all-new RLX flagship sedan, that provide the ideal balance of performance and fuel efficiency that is right for each product and a driving experience that is dynamic and emotional."

The ZDX is built in the same Alliston, Ontario plant as the Acura MDX, which shares the platform with ZDX. As a result, ZDX production will be discontinued in conjunction with the transfer of the popular MDX to the company's Lincoln, Alabama plant in early 2013 (as previously announced).

For 2013, the Acura ZDX will be sold as a single, valued-added package offering clients greater value on a luxury scale. Robust features now standard on the 2013 ZDX include the 435-watt Acura/ELS Surround® 10-speaker audio system with 15 GB hard disk drive (HDD) memory, Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™, 8-inch high-resolution VGA display, multi-view rear view camera, Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® wireless telephone interface, ventilated and heated front seats with perforated premium Milano leather seating surfaces, Keyless Access System (with Smart Entry and pushbutton ignition) and dual-zone automatic climate control system.

The ZDX will receive several new exterior features for 2013, such as a redesigned front grille, front and rear bumpers with integrated parking sensors, power-folding auto-dimming side mirrors and a dark accent on the wheels for a sportier finish. The interior receives a new wood trim on the center console and a high contrast interior option.

Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW) are two new safety features for the 2013 ZDX. The Forward Collision Warning (FCW) system can detect vehicles ahead of the ZDX. If the FCW system determines that a collision is possible with a detected vehicle, it provides the driver with visual and audio alerts to encourage avoidance actions. Lane Departure Warning (LDW) uses a camera mounted between the windshield and the rear-view mirror to detect lane lines on the road. If the driver begins to drift out of a detected lane without using the turn indicator, the system will provide the driver with visual and audible alerts.

Honda Launches Corporate Social Responsibility Statement for North America and Accompanying Website

In an ongoing effort to be "a company that society wants to exist," American Honda Motor Co, Inc. today announced its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Statement for North America and the launch of a complementary Corporate Social Responsibility website.

The Corporate Social Responsibility website will showcase Honda's efforts and dedication through four main pillars – environment, diversity, community, and education-- as well as a section detailing "what we believe." Each pillar will feature Honda associates and our community partners sharing programs and initiatives about which they are passionate. Through ongoing blog posts, photos and videos, we hope to highlight the stories of our community partners and share the great work they are doing. We welcome the online community to join in the conversation by commenting, sharing, participating in site surveys and creating content.

The launch of the CSR website coincides with Honda's announcement of a Corporate Social Responsibility Statement for North America. 2013 Honda CR-Z Makes Unexpected Debut at 2012 Indonesia Auto Show

The 2013 Honda CR-Z made an unexpected debut at the 2012 Indonesia Auto Show, offering a first look at the face-lift of the compact hybrid.

Honda did not release official images of the redesigned CR-Z. Media outlets around the world picked up photos of the CR-Z from the Web site of Paul Tan, an automotive reporter who covers Malaysia.

An American Honda Motor Co. spokesman who spoke to Edmunds on Friday was unable to explain the unusual choice of venue for the unveiling of the Honda CR-Z. Honda announced on September 14 that the CR-Z would debut at the 2012 Paris Auto Show.

Tan reported that the revised CR-Z now delivers 134 horsepower — up from 122 on the current Honda CR-Z. Honda's hybrid three-door hatch is equipped with a 1.5-liter gasoline four-cylinder engine that teams up with a front-drive electric motor powered by a nickel-metal hydride battery pack.

Tan said the showcar's doors were locked, limiting what he could see of the interior.

The 2013 CR-Z refresh includes a new grille, revised front bumper, new foglights and restyled alloy wheels. The first full official image of the CR-Z was released last Friday. Bits and pieces of the refreshed hybrid were revealed earlier, including such details as a new instrument panel button marked "S+" and LED headlights.

2013 Honda CR-Z Revealed Ahead of 2012 Paris Auto Show

The 2013 Honda CR-Z, which is set to get more power, was revealed ahead of its debut at the 2012 Paris Auto Show.

The first full image of the CR-Z was released on Friday. Bits and pieces of the refreshed hybrid were revealed earlier, including such details as restyled alloy wheels, a new instrument panel button marked "S+" and LED headlights.

No powertrain specifications were disclosed, but Honda said "the power of both the petrol engine and electric motor has been increased without comprising fuel economy or increasing exhaust emissions."

Honda said that performance and the hybrid's European on-sale date will be announced at the Paris show.

The 2012 Honda CR-Z hybrid is equipped with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 122 horsepower. The engine is linked to a standard six-speed manual transmission. The EPA says the 2012 CR-Z with the manual transmission returns 31 mpg in city driving and 37 mpg on the highway.

The revised 2013 Honda CR-Z will go on sale here in the fall, according to Paul Seredynski, an American Honda Motor Co. spokesman. He said that pricing is not yet available.

The 2012 CR-Z starts at $20,485, including a $790 destination charge. The 2012 CR-Z comes in two trim levels, the CR-Z and CR-Z EX.
